Tilicho Lake Trekking
Tilicho Lake Trek Overview
The Tilicho Lake Trek is a spectacular high-altitude trekking adventure in the Annapurna region of Nepal, leading trekkers to Tilicho Lake (4,920 m) – one of the highest lakes in the world. This trek perfectly blends dramatic mountain scenery, alpine landscapes, sacred lakes, and the classic challenge of crossing the iconic Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), making it ideal for experienced trekkers seeking both challenge and breathtaking beauty.
The journey begins in Kathmandu, followed by a scenic drive through the Marsyangdi Valley to Chame. The trail then winds through beautiful villages like Pisang and Manang, where an essential acclimatization day helps adjust to the high altitude. From Manang, the route leads to Khangsar and Tilicho Base Camp, before an early-morning hike to the awe-inspiring Tilicho Lake, surrounded by Tilicho Peak, Annapurna I, Chulu East, and Chulu West. The adventure continues across the formidable Thorong La Pass before descending to the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath and onward to the windy town of Jomsom.
The trek concludes with a scenic flight to Pokhara and a drive back to Kathmandu, ending with a traditional Nepali farewell dinner. The Tilicho Lake Trek is perfect for adventure enthusiasts, high-altitude trekkers, and photographers seeking an unforgettable Himalayan experience that combines two of Nepal's greatest mountain highlights.
Things That You Need to Know
Duration & Difficulty:
The Tilicho Lake Trek typically ranges from 14 to 16 days. It is a challenging high-altitude trek that requires excellent physical fitness, stamina, and ideally some previous high-altitude trekking experience due to the extreme altitude (over 5,400m) and long days over rough terrain.
Altitude:
The maximum altitude reached is Thorong La Pass at 5,416 meters (17,769 feet). Tilicho Lake itself is at 4,920 meters. Proper acclimatization, built into the itinerary, is absolutely critical for a safe and successful trek.
Best Season:
The best time is during Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) for stable weather and clear skies. These seasons offer the best chance for safe pass crossings and clear views of the magnificent peaks and the lake.
Permits Required:
You will need the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) card. These are included in our package and will be arranged for you.
Accommodation & Meals:
Accommodation is in basic tea houses or lodges along the route, offering simple amenities, meals, and a warm place to rest. The package includes 3 nights in a Kathmandu hotel with breakfast. All meals are provided during the trek.
Altitude Sickness:
Altitude sickness is a very serious risk on this trek due to the extreme heights. Our itinerary is designed with gradual acclimatization, including a rest day in Manang. Our guides are trained to recognize symptoms and can arrange emergency helicopter evacuation if required.
Guides & Porters:
An experienced English-speaking guide and necessary porters (1 porter for 2 guests) are included. Their expertise is invaluable for navigation, safety, and cultural insights at these high altitudes.
