If you are planning to stand at the foot of the world's highest mountain, the most useful question is not only where but when to book. The short answer: for the spring season, start planning four to six months ahead. That means the booking window for spring 2027 is open right now.
Booking early is not about pressure. It is about protecting the things that make the trek safe and enjoyable: your preferred dates, your flights, your lodges and, above all, a proper acclimatization schedule. This guide explains how the timing works, season by season.
The short answer
Season | Months | Best time to book |
Spring | March to May | October to January |
Autumn | September to November | April to June |
Winter | December to February | Flexible, a few weeks to a few months ahead |
Monsoon | June to August | Flexible, but weather limits flights and trails |
Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons because of stable weather, clear mountain views and moderate temperatures. In April and May, the climbing season also brings Everest Base Camp to life with expedition tents and activity. October and November are the busiest autumn weeks.
What sells out first
Late bookings rarely fail because a trek is "full". They get harder because specific things run short, in roughly this order:
Your preferred dates. The first half of March, April, early May, October and November are the most requested.
Flights to Lukla. The classic route begins with a flight into Lukla. In peak season, flights often depart from Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu, which means an early-morning road transfer. Seats are limited and weather can change plans, so flexibility on the schedule matters.
Lodge rooms. The trail is busy in spring and autumn, and tea houses in villages such as Namche Bazaar, Dingboche and Gorak Shep fill up. If you want a private room, booking well ahead gives you the best chance.
Your guide. Experienced, first-aid-trained guides who know the Khumbu valley are booked early in the season.
Why timing affects your safety, not just your convenience
Everest Base Camp sits at about 5,364 m, and the Kala Patthar viewpoint reaches about 5,545 m. The standard trek takes 12 to 14 days and covers roughly 130 km round trip. The days that matter most are the rest days: two nights in Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) with an acclimatization hike, and a rest day at Dingboche (4,410 m).
When a trek is arranged at the last minute, the itinerary is often the first thing squeezed. At Global Nepal Treks, we do not shorten acclimatization to fit a calendar. If a date is tight, we move the date, not the days. This is why a well-planned booking is one of the best things you can do for your summit-day energy and for a trek you actually enjoy.

Your booking timeline, step by step
Four to six months before (now, for spring 2027)
Choose your season and a flexible range of dates.
Contact us to confirm your itinerary and reserve your place.
Check that your passport is valid for at least six months and review Nepal visa requirements.
Three to four months before
Book your international flights, preferably with flexibility, and leave a spare day after the trek. Weather can delay the Lukla flight, and a buffer protects your journey home.
Arrange travel insurance that covers trekking at altitude and emergency helicopter evacuation.
One to three months before
Start training with long hikes, stair work and steady cardio.
Prepare your gear. Most trekkers rent bulky items such as down jackets and sleeping bags in Kathmandu.
The final week
Arrive in Kathmandu a day or two early, meet your guide, and complete your gear check.
We arrange your trekking permits for you. The route requires a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and a local municipality permit.
Can you still book at short notice?
Sometimes, yes. If your dates are flexible, a trek can often be arranged within days. The trade-offs are fewer departure dates, less choice of rooms in busy villages and tighter flights.
If you are reading this in October 2026 and want to trek this autumn, message us as early as possible with your flexibility, and we will tell you honestly what is available. If you can wait, spring 2027 gives you far more choice.
Weather, trail conditions and flexibility
Mountain conditions change. Before you commit to dates, check the latest information for your route. We publish our Nepal trekking trail status update so you can see current conditions region by region. Whatever company you choose, build in a spare day at each end of the trek and make sure your dates can be adjusted if weather requires it.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book the Everest Base Camp trek? For spring or autumn, four to six months is a sensible guide. Book earlier if you want a private room or a particular departure date.
Is it too late to book for spring 2027? No. The window is open now and runs through about January. The earlier you book, the more choice you have.
Do I need to book in advance for the monsoon or winter? There is less pressure on dates, but you still need permits, flights and a guide arranged. Flexibility matters more than lead time.
Can I trek to Everest Base Camp on my own? It is possible in principle, but we do not recommend it. A guide handles logistics, monitors altitude and helps in an emergency.
What if my Lukla flight is cancelled? Flight delays happen in the mountains. Keep a spare day in your schedule and carry insurance. For travellers short on time, our Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is an alternative way to see the mountain.
